St. George’s Anglican Church, situated at the intersection of Charlotte and Nepean Streets in the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia, is a distinguished example of Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed between 1785 and 1791, this stone landmark embodies a timeless and dignified aesthetic. Both the church and its adjoining graveyard are officially recognized for their provincial heritage significance.
Heritage Value
St. George’s Anglican Church is historically significant as the oldest Anglican church on Cape Breton Island and the oldest building in Sydney. It is renowned for its long-standing history and for exemplifying the influential role of its parish council during colonial times in Cape Breton. The church's cemetery is the final resting place for many of Sydney's early notable citizens.
Construction of St. George’s Church began in 1785, carried out by engineers from the British 33rd Regiment of Foot, coinciding with Sydney's establishment as the capital of the new Colony of Cape Breton; however, it was not completed or officially recognized as a parish until 1791.
Architectural Value
St. George’s Church demonstrates remarkable architectural evolution since its inception. Originally a modest stone structure in the Gothic Revival style, it measured approximately 18 by 12 meters and featured three circular windows on both the north and south walls. In 1853, a chancel and vestry were added, followed by extensive reconstruction from 1859 into the early 1860s, incorporating Gothic Revival elements such as an open ceiling and pointed windows adorned with stained glass. A stone tower with a spire replaced the original wooden tower damaged by a storm in 1873, and aside from a crypt added in 1974, the church largely retains its post-renovation appearance. The interior houses memorial tablets, stained-glass windows honoring notable individuals, wall-mounted headstones, and a Casavant organ. This stone Gothic Revival style reflects important missionary principles of the era and a significant period in English Christian architecture, with such stone examples being rare across Nova Scotia.
St. George's Graveyard is celebrated for its early sandstone and limestone grave markers, which exemplify historic burial practices and showcase exceptional craftsmanship and folk artistry, including a distinctive collection of tomb-style markers created by local artisans..
Historical and Spiritual Value
For nearly two hundred twenty years, St. George’s Church has functioned as a site for worship among residents of Sydney. Initially encompassing all regions of Cape Breton Island within its Parish jurisdiction, it served as the chapel for British garrison forces until 1854, when it was granted Royal Pew status—becoming officially recognized as a place for members of the Royal Family should they visit—a role it continues to uphold today.
Furthermore, St. George’s Church has played an essential part in Cape Breton’s narrative during its time as an independent colony; notably during the Colonial Period (1784-1820), when no sessions were convened for the colony's House Assembly—the positions held within St. George’s vestry were amongst few elected roles available on Cape Breton Island at that time, attracting various local figures who sought election to further their political aspirations.
Many prominent individuals from Sydney's Colonial Period onward are interred within St. George's Graveyard; memorials inside include one honoring Judge A.C. Dodd—Cape Breton Island's first Chief Magistrate—as well as others commemorating significant local figures such as Bishop Hibbert Binney (the fourth Bishop of Nova Scotia) through memorial windows located in both chancel and nave areas.

119-Year-Old NJ Amusement Park to Close and Be Offered for Sale
The historic Clementon Park & Splash World in South Jersey has officially closed and is set to be listed for sale, as announced by its corporate owner on Wednesday. This marks the second closure of the iconic amusement park within a span of seven years. The venue, under the ownership of Chicago-based IB Parks & Entertainment, ceased operations on Monday following the end of its summer season for 2026.
In a statement shared on the park's website, management expressed their sadness over this decision: "After five memorable years, we are saddened to announce that we have made the difficult decision to close the park and plan to offer it for sale. It has been a privilege to care for a place that has meant so much to generations of families. We are hopeful that we will find a buyer who shares our love for Clementon Park and will carry its history and legacy forward."
IB Parks & Entertainment purchased the 52-acre site at a foreclosure auction in March 2021 for $2.37 million. The park had previously closed unexpectedly in late 2019 due to a default on a $4.5 million loan under previous ownership and remained closed until IB Parks reopened it in summer 2021.
Clementon Park was established in 1907 by Theodore Gibbs and his sons as a traditional "trolley park," designed to boost weekend transit use while providing recreational opportunities for residents near Philadelphia. Located on a spring-fed lake between Philadelphia and Atlantic City, it remained family-owned for over a century before being sold for the first time in 2011.
Over the years, the park transformed into a combination amusement and water park following a significant renovation costing $5 million in July 1993 that introduced Splash World water park. Key attractions include the Hellcat wooden roller coaster, Dragon Coaster, drop tower, giant Ferris wheel, and various water slides.
IB Parks & Entertainment operates Indiana Beach Amusement and Water Park located in Monticello, Indiana but did not disclose any specific financial reasons behind this closure. Management indicated that further information regarding the sale of the property would be provided as it becomes available

Arlington Cemetery Halts Excavation of Confederate Memorial as Statue's Return is Scheduled
The administration of President Donald Trump has altered the wording on a sign at Arlington National Cemetery that previously criticized a Confederate memorial, replacing it with a new marker in anticipation of the monument's return to the cemetery in 2027.
According to a report by The Washington Post on Monday, officials have removed descriptions labeling the 32-foot bronze Confederate Memorial as offering a “mythologized” view of the Confederacy and “sanitized” representations of slavery.
These modifications also apply to the Defense Department’s website, where earlier historical descriptions of the monument have been eliminated, as noted by the Post, which contrasted archived versions with current content.
Designed by sculptor Moses Ezekiel and commissioned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Confederate Memorial was dedicated at Arlington in 1914. In late 2023, following Congressional mandates for the military to eliminate symbols honoring the Confederacy, the Army removed this monument after recommendations from the congressionally established Naming Commission.
The statue featured depictions of Confederate figures and included portrayals of Black individuals that critics have argued are stereotypical representations related to slavery. Previous interpretive materials at Arlington indicated that the sculpture promoted an idealized image of antebellum society and downplayed slavery's significance through its association with the “Lost Cause” narrative regarding the Civil War.
The updated sign now states that after conservation and refurbishment efforts, the Army plans to display the sculpture again in its original location in 2027, according to The Post. Similarly, Arlington National Cemetery’s website indicates that Section 16 will host this sculpture by 2027 while new interpretative materials are being developed.
The Trump administration has defended its actions to restore monuments associated with the Confederacy as part of an initiative aimed at preserving what they consider American history. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced in August 2025 that plans were underway for returning the Confederate Memorial to Arlington, asserting a belief against “erasing American history.” Following this announcement, officials stated that restoration work would commence prior to returning it to the cemetery.
The Army estimates that restoring this monument will require approximately $10 million and take two years, according to reports from Associated Press. However, this planned return has faced opposition from members of the commission responsible for recommending its removal.
Retired Army Brigadier General Ty Seidule, who served as vice chairman on the Naming Commission, expressed his view that this monument represents an especially offensive instance of Confederate commemoration and opposed its reinstatement. Historian Stephen West from Catholic University also criticized alterations made to previous signage during his visit last Sunday; he informed The Post that earlier materials accurately reflected how slavery and Confederate ideals were depicted within this memorial.
While conservation efforts continue on-site, Arlington National Cemetery asserts it aims to provide visitors with comprehensive historical context through newly crafted interpretative material upon reinstallation. Currently, however, the Confederate Memorial remains stored until refurbishment work is completed. The Army anticipates reintroducing this sculpture at Arlington in 2027.

Witness Describes Amazon Plane Crash at MIA as Cinematic
Federal officials have arrived in South Florida to investigate the circumstances surrounding a tragic incident involving an Amazon cargo aircraft at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses have begun recounting their experiences of the moment when the plane failed to land properly, crashed, and erupted in flames. Grace Mercado described being in a car driven by her partner when he made a startling observation.
"We heard a loud noise," she recalled. "He said, 'Oh my goodness. Is that a plane crash?'"
Mercado stated that as she looked up from her phone, she noticed the Amazon cargo plane had gone past the runway, crossed a street in Miami-Dade, and come to a halt.
"It was incredibly loud," she explained. "I’ve never encountered anything like it before; it felt like everything shook. Honestly, I can’t compare it to any other experience."
Mercado admitted feeling disoriented as she tried to process what had just happened. "The plane was engulfed in smoke," she remarked. "It felt surreal—like something right out of a film. It was unbelievable."
Initially, there were no first responders visible at the scene, but that quickly changed. "There weren't any ambulances or anything at first," she noted. "But they arrived in under a minute—it was absolutely chaotic."
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, over 60 units and approximately 200 personnel responded to the crash site, with initial teams reaching within seconds. The incident resulted in five fatalities and five injuries.
In a statement, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue expressed their condolences: "Our hearts are with the victims and their families following Sunday’s tragic cargo plane crash. We are profoundly saddened by this loss of life and hold those injured close in our thoughts and prayers."

According to consumer advocates, each time you mail a paper check, you are exposing your bank account to potential risks. Check fraud is increasing, even though the volume of checks being used is on the decline. Federal data indicates that in 2025, Americans faced greater financial losses from check fraud compared to scams involving debit or gift cards.
While consumers are writing fewer checks nowadays, the amounts tend to be significantly larger, which attracts criminals’ attention. “Criminals recognize that when they spot a check in the mail, it’s more likely to be for $10,000 rather than just $10,” stated Scott Anchin, senior vice president of strategic initiatives and policy at the Independent Community Bankers of America.
Historically, paper checks were ubiquitous; however, by 2024, they accounted for merely 3% of all payments in the United States, according to the Federal Reserve. In the past, people frequently wrote checks for everyday expenses like bills and groceries. Today, checks are predominantly reserved for larger one-off payments such as hiring contractors or settling tax obligations.
The increase in check sizes heightens the risk for thieves. While check fraud has existed for a long time, advancements in technology provide criminals with more sophisticated tools. “Two or three decades ago, we were dealing with individual perpetrators,” Anchin remarked. “Now we face organized criminal groups that specialize in check fraud—they steal large quantities of checks and possess advanced technology to modify existing ones or generate entirely new ones.”

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts finds itself once again embroiled in a political and cultural controversy, as President Donald Trump pursues initiatives to transform this renowned institution located in Washington, DC.
Last month, the board of the Kennedy Center voted to reinstate Trump’s name on the building and designate its grounds as “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” However, this decision remains entangled in legal proceedings and has not yet been implemented.
This move by the board occurred despite a federal judge's prior ruling that alters to the center’s official name cannot be executed without Congressional approval. Government attorneys contend that the new signage would acknowledge Trump's contributions to the renovation of the facility rather than constitute an official renaming.
Additionally, renovation plans have taken an unexpected turn. In a recent court document, the Trump administration cautioned that without essential repairs, the Kennedy Center could eventually face demolition. The proposal included replacing it with an outdoor amphitheater, although officials from the administration have minimized this suggestion as a current plan.

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, which has been deployed for close to nine months in support of U.S. operations against Iran, arrived at a port in eastern Thailand on Wednesday, providing the approximately 5,000 crew members with a chance for rest and relaxation by the beach. The sailors and Marines aboard the nuclear-powered vessel had not set foot on land for over 260 days, and reports surfaced last month regarding declining mental health among the crew alongside shortages of essential food supplies onboard.
The Navy played down these issues, while President Donald Trump remarked that the Lincoln’s extended deployment was “not nearly long enough.” Launched in 1988 and measuring roughly three American football fields in length, the Lincoln docked at Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province shortly after the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., one of several vessels within its carrier strike group, passed through the area. Another ship, the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls, was en route to Map Ta Phut in nearby Rayong province.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the ship has been deployed for a total of 286 days since November, marking Thailand as its first complete port stop during this period. Hungry bears infiltrate homes and businesses in the Western U.S. at Unprecedented Rates
Matt Errico was using the restroom when he heard unusual sounds in his Colorado residence. Curious, the roofer emerged to discover two young bears, roughly the size of golden retrievers, standing in his hallway. After an intense moment of mutual observation, the bears dashed out through the front door.
While Errico had previously dealt with bears rummaging through his trash, this incident marked a new experience for him. “I’ve certainly never heard of cubs wandering inside someone’s home,” he remarked regarding bear interactions in Granby, his small mountain town located approximately 57 miles (92 km) northwest of Denver.
The black bears—also seen in a vape shop in Granby—are among thousands making their way into urban areas across the Western United States in record numbers. Reports indicate that bears have approached schools in Santa Fe, New Mexico; climbed trees near farmers' markets in Denver; and startled residents nationwide after an exceptionally dry winter devastated plants, grasses, berries, and nuts that constitute about 90% of their diet, as noted by bear specialists and state wildlife agencies.
Driven by their remarkable sense of smell, these animals are increasingly attracted to human food sources. This has resulted in unprecedented bear fatalities in some regions due to euthanization, vehicle collisions, shootings, and electrocutions as they come into contact with humans.
Experts are concerned that ongoing aridification in the West may lead bears to become reliant on human food and potentially abandon hibernation if winters turn excessively warm. “This is like a trial for both bears and humans that has never been experienced before,” stated black bear specialist Jon Beckmann.
As development expands into areas traditionally used by bears for foraging, bear populations have surged back in states such as Nevada, where they had been nearly eradicated over a century ago. Currently, black bears represent the healthiest species among the world’s eight bear varieties, with estimates of 17,000 to 20,000 residing solely within Colorado according to state officials.
Colorado is experiencing a significant number of bear encounters following a more than doubling of its human population over the past 50 years. This growth has led to residential developments encroaching upon areas traditionally inhabited by bears around cities like Colorado Springs and Vail.

US stocks remain stable as anticipation grows for the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates.
The U.S. stock market is displaying a degree of stability on Friday, while the bond market is increasingly anticipating a forthcoming interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve to address the nation’s elevated inflation levels. The S&P 500 has gained 0.3%, and by 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had risen by 89 points, or 0.2%, with the Nasdaq composite also up by 0.3%.
The bond market reacted more significantly after Kevin Warsh's inaugural speech as Fed chairman at an annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a location historically associated with key Fed policy announcements—and expectations were high for Warsh.
Concerns have arisen that Warsh's assertive remarks about reducing inflation to the Fed's target of 2% may be hollow unless accompanied by decisive action from the Fed. While increasing short-term interest rates could assist in curbing inflation, such measures might also decelerate economic growth and adversely affect investment prices. Forecasts indicate that regions in the Midwest and along the West Coast are likely to enjoy clearer skies for this event, during which approximately 96 percent of the moon will be obscured by Earth’s shadow. For many Americans, this eclipse presents a unique opportunity to experience one of nature's most captivating displays without needing special equipment or travel.
According to AccuWeather senior meteorologist John Feerick, "There appears to be a weather front moving through the eastern United States, leading to widespread showers and thunderstorms from New England down through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Southeast." He added that viewing conditions along I-95 and further south into states like Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia are expected to be challenging.
The deep partial lunar eclipse is scheduled for the night of August 27 into August 28 when Earth aligns between the sun and a full moon, casting its shadow over roughly 96 percent of the moon's surface. At the peak of the eclipse around 12:12 a.m. EDT on August 28, only a small portion of the moon will remain illuminated by direct sunlight, while much of it may take on a reddish or coppery color typically associated with “blood moons.”
This event will be visible across North and South America as well as parts of Europe and Africa, depending on weather conditions. Unlike solar eclipses, no special eye protection is required for viewers. Those in the United States can observe the eclipse from late evening on August 27 through early morning on August 28, with optimal viewing occurring around midnight Eastern time. Target issued an apology for a controversial children's Halloween costume following public backlash.
American retail giant Target has removed a Halloween costume from its shelves following social media backlash over its resemblance to a racist caricature. The company described the costume as "offensive" and "hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners," without providing additional details. Online images show the costume marketed as the "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume," which many customers and social media users say evokes blackface and minstrel shows. "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target stated. "The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment." The company emphasized that removing the costume is an important first step and is reviewing how the situation occurred and what changes are needed to prevent a recurrence. When approached by the BBC, Target declined to comment further. Close to home….
Hello everyone,
I sincerely apologize for not having provided an editorial in quite a while. Life can become hectic, making it easy to lose track of time. This particular message is very personal and may resonate with a friend or loved one (I won’t disclose the individual’s name) who holds significance in my life.
Recently, I felt compelled to reach out to this person after some time had passed. After several rings, I left a voicemail. Approximately 30 minutes later, they returned my call. I was eager to hear how they were doing; however, the news shared was concerning.
This individual has been unwell for an extended period and recently attended court due to their divorce proceedings. For confidentiality's sake, I'll refer to them as J. Upon returning home from court, J called me back first among others whom they reached out to. When I asked what was happening, J replied with “Where do I begin?”
J then proceeded with their story: "V and I are going through a divorce," said J solemnly, "and my health has deteriorated significantly." They spoke about having undergone numerous surgeries that turned their life upside down—a point where thoughts of ending everything crossed their mind even leading them towards actions that could harm themselves.
As tears streamed down my face during our conversation—hearing such distressing details—I listened intently as J recounted feeling overwhelmed on one occasion when contemplating self-harm but hearing voices around them led them reconsider before acting impulsively.
In that moment of despair while holding onto something harmful—referred here metaphorically as 'the pew'—they noticed sounds coming from nearby bushes which revealed two individuals approaching concerned for well-being upon observing distress signals emanating from j.
The couple expressed concern asking if help was needed; noticing what held significant weight—they intervened by taking away any means intended for self-harm so necessary support could be offered instead.
Wiping away tears brought on by empathy for all the struggles J has faced in recent events left me feeling both powerless and compelled to act, especially upon realizing that previous attempts to seek parental guidance had gone unacknowledged and unmet.
Our conversation lasted nearly two hours, during which sharing our feelings openly provided a sense of relief. It was clear that both of us were seeking affirmation amid recent turmoil. Let this serve as a reminder: if you know someone who is struggling or experiencing thoughts of self-harm, please encourage them to reach out for help immediately.

Next Week is My Final Week as a Summer Intern.
As my internship comes to a close next week, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable experiences and growth I’ve gained over the past months. Working at a local newspaper and contributing to my own website has taught me essential skills in journalism, time management, and effective communication. I’ve learned how to research thoroughly, write clearly under tight deadlines, and adapt to unexpected challenges while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Beyond technical skills, this internship has deepened my appreciation for persistence and curiosity in reporting. Collaborating with editors, fellow writers, and sources has strengthened my confidence and highlighted the nature of news production. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to stories that inform and engage readers, and I look forward to applying these lessons as I continue to pursue a career in the media.
Reflecting my final week, this summer has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It is bittersweet to conclude this chapter, especially as my college newspaper-a vital insitution with over 60 years of history-is being discontinued this fall due to budget cuts. While it is heartbreaking to see such a legacy come to an end. I am deeply grateful for this time i spent as a college journalist and for the hands-on professional growth i gained during the internship. It is unusual to begin the school year in July.
As summer comes to a close, K-12 schools are preparing to commence their sessions. It is astonishing that schools in Arizona have already begun their academic year. After conducting some research, I discovered that one of the counties, Chandler USD, initiated classes on July 15. This timing is indeed surprising, considering it coincides with the hottest period in Arizona.
Having previously resided in Arizona but relocating from Michigan in late December, I did not begin school until the start of the new year. The thought of starting school in July or even August seems unfathomable to me. Interestingly, students there enjoy a fall break from October 12 to October 16, 2026. This arrangement somewhat mirrors the Kent School District in Washington State, where students receive a break during Presidents' Week.
In contrast, when I attended school in Michigan, our breaks were limited to Winter Break and Spring Break (with observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day). I faced disciplinary action for attending vocational training at Jackson Area Career Center on that day since other schools did not recognize MLK Day.
It is important to acknowledge that educational policies vary significantly across different districts. Today’s educational environment differs greatly from my high school experience; it is much more regulated with measures such as metal detectors and security cameras becoming commonplace. Recently, homeschooling has surged by 110% compared to last year. Although I attempted homeschooling for my child and a friend in 2020—a challenging experience—I was fortunate enough to find someone who could assist us.
In conclusion, it remains remarkable that the Arizona school district commenced its academic year back in July.

Strange Year for The Detroit Tigers
August has arrived, signaling the conclusion of the baseball season. Just ten days ago, the trade deadline was approaching quickly. While several teams engaged in trades, one transaction came as a surprise and had been speculated throughout the season: the Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal. A free agent at the end of this season, many had anticipated he would remain with Detroit. However, General Manager Scott Harris made a decisive move by trading away one of baseball's most formidable pitchers, a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner.
Fans expressed their outrage over losing the league's top pitcher, despite the Tigers acquiring three highly regarded prospects from the Los Angeles Dodgers in return. The Dodgers have consistently maintained a strong pool of top-tier prospects for future seasons. The Tigers' general manager is focused on rebuilding due to a relatively weak farm system, emphasizing that developing young talent is crucial for franchise growth. Currently, they have two prominent players at the major league level: Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark.
Skubal was likely to depart regardless since his agent intends for him to explore free agency in 2027. Given recent trends, it seems uncertain whether he will even participate in that 2027 season—a topic worth discussing separately. After trading both Skubal and Casey Mize, many expected the Tigers to struggle; however, they have begun to show improvement after a challenging May month. Their current ERA stands at an impressive 3.49.
Since June 1st, they have maintained a .500 record and recently won two out of three games against the San Francisco Giants, marking a seven-game winning streak. In several matches during this stretch, their offense recorded double-digit runs—including two games against Sacramento. This week in Detroit features matchups against the Cleveland Guardians from August 11-13 and then against the Chicago White Sox from August 14-16.
These upcoming games are pivotal for the Detroit Tigers; anything can unfold when facing these teams in baseball.

Is MySpace experiencing a resurgence?
I have been active on social media since the MySpace days, and I recently heard it may be making a comeback. I have also have a TikTok account for the past six years. During that time, I came across a social media influencer who works as a flight attendant. When I first started following her, she was not married, but she seemed to have a unique personal life that she shared online.
She eventually married her boyfriend and continued posting on her other platform. She shared updates about her life almost every day. About a year ago, things changed after it appeared that her husband had been involved with someone else. The situation quickly spiraled, but she and her husband eventually worked through it and patched things up.
A few months ago, she suddenly posted a video announcing that she was pregnant. The twist was that, because of her open marriage, she said she did not know who the father was. As a content creator, she chose to share that situation publicly, and that is the part that upset me.
I do not think moments like this should be shared on social media. After she narrowed down who the father might be, she told her husband and then posted his reaction online. I felt bad for him because of how public the situation became. In my opinion, something that personal should have been handled privately rather than shared on a social media platform.
I am surprised that the company she works for allows her public online behavior to reflect on its image. I eventually unfollowed her account because I found the content distasteful and felt that the situation was getting out of hand. In my opinion, this kind of personal matter should be kept off social media, especially when so many people continue to engage with it as entertainment.
I do not mind lighthearted or unusual videos, but sharing public updates about DNA tests, questions about paternity, and ongoing personal drama feels like too much. In my opinion, matters like that should be handled privately rather than posted for millions of people to watch. It is uncomfortable enough to see that kind of drama on reality television, where so much of it already feels staged.
I am not going to name the company she works for, identify her personally, or describe what she does outside of her job. However, readers may be able to figure out who I am referring to base on the details shared here.

The WNBA must become more aware of its current situation.
Politics can be hard to avoid because it shows up everywhere. On my website, I plan to keep political commentary to a minimum and only address it when an issue is especially important.
This time, though, I feel compelled to say something. I have generally supported the WNBA, but lately the league has seemed to lose control of the conversation surrounding Sophie Cunningham’s comments. After she made those remarks, several players appeared to target her, and during Saturday’s game she was clotheslined while driving for a layup. (not the first time either)
Cunningham is not someone I would underestimate, especially given her background in karate and other martial arts. Carrington’s hit was a clear cheap shot, and her ejection only intensified the reaction afterward. Carrington, who is African American, later described the situation as “white privilege,” arguing that Cunningham, who is white, remained in the game while she was removed.
After watching the replay, I did not see Sophie do much beyond a small push. By today’s standards, that seemed minor compared with Carrington clotheslining her as if it were a WWE match. I have not seen anything like it since Kevin McHale knocked down Kurt Rambis during the 1984 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Rambis got up ready to respond, but James Worthy stepped in and pushed him away.
As I said, Sophie appeared to do little more than give a small shove. She was clearly angry, and if her teammate and the coaching staff had not stepped in, the situation could have escalated quickly. The WNBA needs stronger leadership and clearer control of its games. Over the past two years, the league has looked increasingly rough, with Caitlin Clark taking repeated hard contact while many fouls appeared to go uncalled. If Clark decides to step away, the WNBA could face serious trouble. Something has to change if the league wants to keep growing and survive long term.

Steve Ballmer should apologize to Clippers fans.
It has been eight days since the NBA imposed one of the most severe sanctions in its history on the LA Clippers, placing the organization in a challenging position both now and for the future. The franchise faces significant difficulties in assembling competitive teams due to the loss of their five first-round draft picks.
Clearly, the primary victims of this situation are Clippers fans. However, since the announcement of the punishment, the team has failed to recognize this reality.
Steve Ballmer, Lawrence Frank, and other executives have remained conspicuously silent following the league's decision. They issued a single statement on the day of the announcement through Ballmer's attorney, David Kelley, which was directed at the league office and accused them of conducting a "witch hunt." In that communication, they strongly refuted the investigation’s findings and criticized Pablo Torre.
While it is within their rights to challenge these findings, it is unacceptable that they have not acknowledged that Clippers fans—the true victims—were overlooked in that letter or in any subsequent communications.
Rather than addressing fan concerns, the letter focused instead on how much financial resources Ballmer allocated to fund this investigation—$50 million spent on an external law firm—as if attempting to elicit sympathy from fans for one of the wealthiest individuals globally.
This pattern reflects a disturbing trend under Ballmer’s leadership—a clear display of arrogance and ego among top executives within the organization. The way they treated franchise icon Chris Paul during his last season serves as another poignant example; they conduct themselves with arrogance and disregard for accountability, including towards their own supporters.
An apology from Ballmer will not erase any harm done nor alter perceptions surrounding an ownership group that has tarnished the franchise’s reputation and turned it into a subject of ridicule. Nevertheless, offering an apology is still a minimal expectation from him.
In an ideal scenario where leaders are held accountable for their actions, Ballmer would no longer be at the helm of the Clippers. Even so, he would still walk away with substantial profits; however, at least he could no longer inflict harm upon a loyal fanbase that has remained committed through various challenges. Unfortunately for Clippers fans, there is no mechanism for compelling Ballmer to sell the team—but they certainly deserve an acknowledgment of their loyalty through an apology.

FSU-SMU Game Postponed Due to Unusual Power Outage at Doak Campbell Stadium
The matchup between the Florida State Seminoles and the No. 19 SMU Mustangs was expected to commence by now. However, an unusual incident at Doak Campbell Stadium has led to a delay in the game’s start.
As Florida State got ready to take the field for warm-ups, both the primary lighting and audio systems suddenly failed, plunging Seminole supporters into darkness.
The cause of this disruption remains unclear, but it appeared to occur shortly after FSU launched pregame fireworks.
Both teams had already taken their positions on the field when these technical difficulties arose. The players attempted to stay warm for approximately ten minutes before head coaches Mike Norvell and Rhett Lashlee convened at midfield. After their discussion, both the Seminoles and Mustangs returned to their locker rooms.

It is already known that One Roof Sports and Entertainment, primarily owned by Samantha Holloway and also the majority owner of the NHL's Seattle Kraken, has submitted a bid for an NBA expansion team in Seattle. Now, BlackSun Private Equity, a firm based in New York, has joined the competition. In August, they proposed their own bid to reintroduce the NBA to Seattle and are collaborating with the Tulalip Tribes to potentially construct an arena on tribal land if they obtain the franchise.
The proposed site for the new arena would be in Marysville, Washington, located approximately 35 miles from Seattle. The initiative not only aims to establish an arena but also to develop an "entertainment district" on tribal property. A significant challenge will be ensuring convenient access for those traveling from Seattle and persuading residents of the city to make the journey to Marysville.
Both bidding groups have expressed their commitment to keeping a professional basketball team in the Seattle area after the former SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008.
The NBA is actively considering bids for both expansion franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has indicated that he hopes a decision will be made by year-end. What does a name signify?
For the Los Angeles Angels, it holds significant weight. While baseball enthusiasts outside Southern California might overlook such details, fans within the region have often ridiculed owner Arte Moreno’s choice to rename the franchise after a city located 25 miles from Anaheim, where the team has been based since 1966.
On September 1, Moreno announced that he had reached an agreement to sell the franchise to Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. The new ownership will face numerous inquiries regarding their plans for the team, both on and off the field. If relocating to Los Angeles is not part of those plans, Anaheim is likely to request that "Anaheim" be reinstated in the team's name as they are its only year-round tenant at Angel Stadium.
“I feel like it’s my birthday,” said Ashleigh Aitken, mayor of Anaheim, in an interview with The Athletic on Tuesday. “As someone who has been a dedicated Angels fan my whole life, I am very hopeful about the future of Anaheim Angels baseball.”
“This news truly made my year,” commented Natalie Rubalcava, an Anaheim City Council member, in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “I’m thrilled to move past the controversy and negativity and look forward to a new chapter in Anaheim baseball.”
With a reported sale price of $4 billion awaiting approval, this transaction would set a new record that recently surpassed one held for less than a month. In August, the San Diego Padres were sold for $3.9 billion to a group led by José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones.
This lucrative deal represents an impressive profit for Moreno, who acquired the team for $183.5 million in May 2023; however, municipal leaders feel that this financial gain has not positively impacted Anaheim as much as they had hoped.
The city initiated legal action against Moreno two decades ago over concerns that changing the team’s name to "Los Angeles Angels" would result in losses amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. A marketing expert recently quoted by The Times estimated that this renaming has cost Anaheim roughly $26.5 million annually—totaling over $500 million across two decades.
Originally, it was Disney that included "Anaheim" in the team’s name following their purchase from Gene Autry in 1997. Three decades earlier, Autry had altered the team's name from "Los Angeles," where it was based at that time, to "California," aiming for broader marketing appeal beyond just one city.
Currently, it is not California but rather Anaheim pressuring the Angels for a name change. In April 2025, Aitken wrote an open letter addressed to the team seeking to mend relations between them—a step she hopes could lead toward altering their name.

Reports indicate that Ishbia’s United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) could face a margin call from JPMorgan after he used approximately 805 million UWM shares as collateral for the Suns purchase.
“In simple terms, Ishbia pledged about $4.6 billion in UWM stock to JPMorgan, but those shares are now valued at just $1.15 billion. This means he may need to repay the loans in cash and accessing that much liquidity quickly could require selling stakes in his sports teams.”

Just one game into the NFL season, viewers began to express doubts about NBC’s choice to retain Underwood for the “Sunday Night Football” broadcasts. After many years of familiarity for television audiences, it seems the tenure of Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton may be coming to an end due to an ongoing internal investigation. Thornton, who has been with the show for 15 years, has been suspended from his role on the iconic game show, with plans in place to find a new announcer ahead of Season 44, scheduled for 2026.
The suspension was issued by executives at Sony Pictures Television Studios in relation to an incident that occurred during an American Airlines flight in May 2026. However, the statement provided by Sony TV to TMZ did not elaborate on the specifics surrounding the suspension, simply stating:

"We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation."
TMZ reported that Thornton was wearing attire featuring Wheel of Fortune branding when a passenger raised concerns with a flight attendant during the journey. In response, American Airlines released a statement that also refrained from detailing the nature of the complaint:

Sources have revealed that Johnny Depp is nearing a $22.5 million deal to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow—a situation that has reportedly left his former wife Amber Heard feeling "angry" following their legal disputes, which significantly impacted both of their careers.
At 63 years old, Depp is currently in discussions regarding a sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, as confirmed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer. This potential project could see Depp return to the Disney franchise that previously brought him considerable wealth before he was sidelined due to his legal challenges involving Heard, who is now 40.
These negotiations come four years after Depp largely triumphed in his defamation lawsuit against Heard in the U.S., although she won a counterclaim, and six years after he faced defeat in a libel case in the U.K.

Matthew McConaughey has showcased his versatility across a wide range of genres, from HBO's True Detective to the stoner comedy Dazed and Confused, and most recently in The Rivals of Amaziah King. His performances consistently offer audiences something fresh and engaging. He has also been a key figure in romantic comedies, including The Wedding Planner (2001), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), and Failure to Launch (2006). Now, reports indicate that McConaughey is set to return to the genre in a sequel more than two decades in the making.
Paramount is reportedly developing the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days sequel, with Kate Hudson, star of the original film, attached as a producer. The project is in its early stages, with no creative team officially announced yet. While details remain unconfirmed, Hudson, Paramount, and other involved filmmakers are reportedly aiming to have McConaughey reprise his role alongside Hudson. Paramount is currently searching for a screenwriter.

Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara in Flames
As one of Mexico's prominent tourist destinations, Puerto Vallarta has been engulfed in chaos following the death of notorious drug cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera. On the morning of Sunday, February 22, 2026, special forces dispatched by President Claudia Sheinbaum conducted a raid on the location where he was situated. Oseguera was recognized as the nation’s most wanted figure in drug trafficking. The news of his demise during the operation sparked a surge of violence in major cities across Mexico.
The elimination of El Mencho has intensified pressure from the United States for Mexico to adopt a more forceful approach against drug trafficking organizations. Historically, the removal of high-ranking cartel leaders has had minimal effect on the drug trade and often results in a significant leadership void that others are quick to fill through violent means.
Following the raid, a series of retaliatory assaults and substantial roadblocks emerged, instilling fear and uncertainty throughout Mexico as criminal factions vie for control over various territories.
At the Guadalajara International Airport, an attack occurred following the death of a drug cartel member. Local gangs invaded the airport premises, discharging their firearms into the air as tourists and airport personnel sought refuge. Many individuals took cover behind desks and chairs or fled to restrooms for safety, while others dashed towards the runway. It is unclear how many people were hurt during this fiasco. Numerous flights scheduled from Sunday to Monday were canceled.
The smoke rising from vehicles and buildings has cast a shadow over the blue skies near the beach resorts. An American tourist described the atmosphere, stating, "It feels like being in the Twilight Zone, with everyone running down the street, yelling and screaming; the entire area is engulfed in flames." Another tourist recounted witnessing the fires and looting from his resort balcony, pondering how long they would remain locked before airports reopen and evacuation plans are implemented.
This situation poses significant challenges for Mexico amidst civil unrest, particularly with spring break and the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching. American tourists find themselves stranded in Mexico, anxiously awaiting updates regarding their return home.
The Mexican government official, Garcia Harfuch, reported that approximately 25 members of the National Guard lost their lives in various incidents throughout Jalisco. He also mentioned that around 30 suspected criminals were killed amidst the turmoil, along with four fatalities in Michoacán. An anonymous resident from a town named Aguillia recounted, "There was a massive gunfight, and then another one." They further stated, "On Sunday, cartel gunmen attempted to assault a local military outpost but were halted by the soldiers."
Ricardo Trevilla, the Secretary of Defense for Mexico, announced that an additional 2,500 security personnel would be deployed to Jalisco to bolster the existing armed forces already present there. President Sheinbaum indicated that all 250 roadblocks established across 20 states in response to the raid have now been dismantled.
Mexican officials are attempting to minimize concerns regarding potential long-term disruptions resulting from the raid. President Sheinbaum confirmed that flights from Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco have resumed as of Tuesday
RV FIRE AT THE SAFEWAY PARKING LOT
On the morning of Friday, January 23rd, at 3:20 AM, I arrived at the Safeway off Highway 101 in Port Angeles. I entered the building and went to the breakroom. When I finally sat down, I heard someone screaming from outside. Initially, I dismissed it, then heard it again, so I got up and walked down the corridor, and that is when I saw the flame from the RV. My adrenaline kicked in, because I saw a woman trying to go back into the burning vehicle.
I dialed 911 at 3:33 AM while I was outside trying to keep this woman from getting near the burning RV. As I got off the phone with 911, I noticed another person trying to get into the vehicle. The woman I was with told me that was her mom, and she started to yell at her to get away from the fire.
I didn’t want to leave them alone, but there were other vehicles near the RV. I went back inside to locate one of the other Safeway employees and found Kerry Collins, a night stocker. I told him the situation, and instructed him to tell everyone to come out to move their vehicles before I headed back outside. By this time, my heart was racing, and I was feeling overwhelmed as I tried to keep my head on straight and focus. At this point of time, the fire was already engulfing the vehicle. As I was trying to keep the woman with me calm, a huge explosion occurred and knocked both of us down. The explosion sounded like something from a war movie.
My heart was racing even more – would there be another explosion? When I went back to the mother to make sure she was alright, I felt something crawling at my legs. There were at least five pure black puppies, and two were trying to run back to the burning vehicle.
As I was trying to figure out what to do about the puppies, another huge explosion occurred and the puppies nearly knocked me to the ground, very frightened. I was scared at this moment, burning RV debris was raining down, and the smoke was now getting to me and everyone else. At 3:48 AM the Port Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene and made sure the puppies were out of harm’s way.
By this time, I was pretty shaken up, but I knew I had to clock in for my work shift. As I tried to gather my thoughts, I would say about 30 minutes after the ordeal, I broke down crying. The events brought back memories of an incident that happened when I was a child living in a trailer park.
Approximately 90 minutes later, I was paged to come up front to make a statement. By this time, I was sweating and my heart was racing faster than normal as my anxiety kicked in. When I arrived at the primary office, I made a statement to Joan, the Person in Charge. A Clallam County Sheriff came in and wanted to know if anyone was involved. I spoke up and said, “I was first on the scene, yes I was near the fire when the explosions occurred.”
The Sheriff responded, “Since you were near the fire, your throat may be sore for a few days. We recovered several propane tanks. My advice would be to have you get checked out, just to be safe.” I thought about it and I agreed to get checked out.
As we were both walking towards the Fire Rescue Ambulance, I looked at what was left of the RV. I noticed then how close the RV was to the Safeway gas station – within at least one hundred feet. When I arrived at the Fire & Rescue vehicle, I got in and they hooked me up to a monitor just to check my blood pressure. The medic checked my lungs to make sure I did not inhale too much smoke. When that was clear, he noticed my blood pressure was high. He told me, “It is pretty common in this situation, we will keep you here until it goes down more.” I felt my mind and heartbeat slowing down, my anxiety lowering itself. When he checked it again everything was back to normal.
About a week later, I got the update that the mother suffered a slight burn on her right hand. There were two puppies unaccounted for (they were still in the RV). The daughter is doing fine; they both were placed at a shelter by the Red Cross. Several witnesses mentioned that the night before the fire someone was with the two women working on the engine.
