St. George’s Anglican Church, situated at the intersection of Charlotte and Nepean Streets in the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia, is a distinguished example of Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed between 1785 and 1791, this stone landmark embodies a timeless and dignified aesthetic. Both the church and its adjoining graveyard are officially recognized for their provincial heritage significance.
Heritage Value
St. George’s Anglican Church is historically significant as the oldest Anglican church on Cape Breton Island and the oldest building in Sydney. It is renowned for its long-standing history and for exemplifying the influential role of its parish council during colonial times in Cape Breton. The church's cemetery is the final resting place for many of Sydney's early notable citizens.
Construction of St. George’s Church began in 1785, carried out by engineers from the British 33rd Regiment of Foot, coinciding with Sydney's establishment as the capital of the new Colony of Cape Breton; however, it was not completed or officially recognized as a parish until 1791.
Architectural Value
St. George’s Church demonstrates remarkable architectural evolution since its inception. Originally a modest stone structure in the Gothic Revival style, it measured approximately 18 by 12 meters and featured three circular windows on both the north and south walls. In 1853, a chancel and vestry were added, followed by extensive reconstruction from 1859 into the early 1860s, incorporating Gothic Revival elements such as an open ceiling and pointed windows adorned with stained glass. A stone tower with a spire replaced the original wooden tower damaged by a storm in 1873, and aside from a crypt added in 1974, the church largely retains its post-renovation appearance. The interior houses memorial tablets, stained-glass windows honoring notable individuals, wall-mounted headstones, and a Casavant organ. This stone Gothic Revival style reflects important missionary principles of the era and a significant period in English Christian architecture, with such stone examples being rare across Nova Scotia.
St. George's Graveyard is celebrated for its early sandstone and limestone grave markers, which exemplify historic burial practices and showcase exceptional craftsmanship and folk artistry, including a distinctive collection of tomb-style markers created by local artisans..
Historical and Spiritual Value
For nearly two hundred twenty years, St. George’s Church has functioned as a site for worship among residents of Sydney. Initially encompassing all regions of Cape Breton Island within its Parish jurisdiction, it served as the chapel for British garrison forces until 1854, when it was granted Royal Pew status—becoming officially recognized as a place for members of the Royal Family should they visit—a role it continues to uphold today.
Furthermore, St. George’s Church has played an essential part in Cape Breton’s narrative during its time as an independent colony; notably during the Colonial Period (1784-1820), when no sessions were convened for the colony's House Assembly—the positions held within St. George’s vestry were amongst few elected roles available on Cape Breton Island at that time, attracting various local figures who sought election to further their political aspirations.
Many prominent individuals from Sydney's Colonial Period onward are interred within St. George's Graveyard; memorials inside include one honoring Judge A.C. Dodd—Cape Breton Island's first Chief Magistrate—as well as others commemorating significant local figures such as Bishop Hibbert Binney (the fourth Bishop of Nova Scotia) through memorial windows located in both chancel and nave areas.

A significant partial lunar eclipse will be observable throughout much of the United States late Thursday into early Friday, although visibility will vary by state.
Forecasts indicate that regions in the Midwest and along the West Coast are likely to enjoy clearer skies for this event, during which approximately 96 percent of the moon will be obscured by Earth’s shadow. For many Americans, this eclipse presents a unique opportunity to experience one of nature's most captivating displays without needing special equipment or travel.
According to AccuWeather senior meteorologist John Feerick, "There appears to be a weather front moving through the eastern United States, leading to widespread showers and thunderstorms from New England down through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Southeast." He added that viewing conditions along I-95 and further south into states like Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia are expected to be challenging.
The deep partial lunar eclipse is scheduled for the night of August 27 into August 28 when Earth aligns between the sun and a full moon, casting its shadow over roughly 96 percent of the moon's surface. At the peak of the eclipse around 12:12 a.m. EDT on August 28, only a small portion of the moon will remain illuminated by direct sunlight, while much of it may take on a reddish or coppery color typically associated with “blood moons.”
This event will be visible across North and South America as well as parts of Europe and Africa, depending on weather conditions. Unlike solar eclipses, no special eye protection is required for viewers. Those in the United States can observe the eclipse from late evening on August 27 through early morning on August 28, with optimal viewing occurring around midnight Eastern time. Astronomers highlight that this will be one of the most striking lunar eclipses until late 2028 due to such a significant portion of the moon passing through Earth's darkest shadow known as the umbra.

Prince Harry and Meghan Return to the UK, Six Years After Departing from Royal Duties
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the United Kingdom on Wednesday, according to various media reports, six years after they departed while stepping back from royal duties.
The BBC, the nation's public broadcaster, previously noted that Prince Harry and Meghan, accompanied by their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were believed to have arrived privately from California.
A UK newspaper indicated that the family touched down at Birmingham Airport around midday on Wednesday. Reports state they traveled on a Bombardier Global Express XRS luxury long-range business jet, as per Britain’s PA Media news agency.
When contacted by CNN, a spokesperson for the Sussexes did not disclose any details regarding the family's travel.
Last week revealed that the Sussexes would be returning to the UK after residing in the United States for six years. Archie, aged 7, and Lilibet, aged 5, are already registered at British schools for the upcoming term commencing in September.
Harry and Meghan are coming back to the UK as private individuals and will not take up any official responsibilities on behalf of King Charles III. Target issued an apology for a controversial children's Halloween costume following public backlash.
American retail giant Target has removed a Halloween costume from its shelves following social media backlash over its resemblance to a racist caricature. The company described the costume as "offensive" and "hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners," without providing additional details. Online images show the costume marketed as the "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume," which many customers and social media users say evokes blackface and minstrel shows. "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target stated. "The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment." The company emphasized that removing the costume is an important first step and is reviewing how the situation occurred and what changes are needed to prevent a recurrence. When approached by the BBC, Target declined to comment further. The retailer, known for its affordable clothing and wide range of groceries, household goods, electronics, and toys, has recently faced supply shortages and criticism over ending its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) targets, as well as its handling of products in its 2023 Pride Collection.

About 90,000 individuals in Reno, Nevada, and the nearby North Valley are under evacuation orders due to a rapidly advancing wildfire threatening the area.
The Hawk fire ignited on Saturday northwest of Reno and expanded swiftly with "extreme fire behavior." By Monday morning, it had consumed over 15,000 acres and was reported as being completely uncontained.
Although no fatalities have been recorded thus far, local media reports indicate that at least six people sustained injuries—including three first responders—along with multiple homes atop mountains destroyed. Shane Akerson, Battalion Chief for the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, confirmed to the Reno Gazette Journal that “the fire was human-caused," though he noted an ongoing investigation with further details available at this time.
Authorities announced that only one school in Washoe County will remain open on Monday. Nearly 10,000 residences and businesses in the county experienced power outages. Additionally, sections of US Route 395—a significant north-south highway—were closed off.
As neighborhoods surrounded the quickly spreading blaze, Richard Edwards—the local fire chief—advised residents to be prepared for immediate evacuations when instructed: “The Hawk Fire is very dynamic for us since it's driven by winds.” He elaborated on how wind-driven fires can advance rapidly into residential areas.

Texas judge denies Karmelo Anthony’s request for a new trial in Deadly Track Meet Stabbing.
A Texas judge has turned down Karmelo Anthony's petition for a new trial regarding the stabbing death of 17-year-old athlete Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet. This incident, which garnered significant national attention, also resulted in harassment directed towards the families involved. At 19 years old, Anthony was found guilty of murder in June and received a 35-year prison sentence for the fatal attack on Metcalf in April 2025. Judge Michael Chitty issued a brief ruling on Saturday following a two-day hearing held near Dallas, stating that he had reviewed the evidence and arguments presented but did not provide further details.
Russell Wilson, serving as Anthony’s attorney, indicated that they would pursue an appeal. "Our dedication to our client remains steadfast," Wilson remarked. "We will persist in advocating vigorously for him through all legal channels available."
Prosecutor Bill Wirskye upheld the integrity of the original trial this week. In response to the denial of the retrial motion, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis stated, "We respect and anticipated the court's ruling against the new trial request. Woman charged with plotting a significant attack on the New York State Capitol
The FBI announced on Thursday that it had prevented a potential terrorist attack in Albany. A New York woman, Jessica Bowie, 35, is accused of plotting a major assault on the state Capitol building, according to authorities. Federal prosecutors in the Northern District of New York charged her with attempting to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations, carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Bowie, an Albany resident, allegedly planned the attack using explosives between July 16 and August 17 of this year. The FBI said undercover operations led to her arrest. "Bowie intended to use an explosive device against the New York State Capitol and state senators," stated First Assistant U.S. Attorney John Sarcone. "These allegations are deeply troubling. To harbor such hatred toward our way of life and target the state Capitol and its senators is an attack on democracy itself, one we will not tolerate." Sarcone also noted that Bowie was radicalized online and disseminated messages of hate and violence against Americans. The affidavit claims she surveilled the Capitol on five occasions, all captured on security cameras, while communicating with an FBI source posing as an ISIS operative.

Human remains have been discovered again at Lake Mead as drought-driven water levels continue to decline.
Human remains have once again been uncovered at Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada, marking the latest in a series of grim discoveries as water levels in the vital reservoir continue to fall, authorities reported. The remains were found on August 16, and the National Park Service (NPS) indicated that there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the body. Las Vegas police stated that a non-criminal dead-body report was filed, while the local coroner said efforts are underway to identify the deceased and determine the cause and manner of death. In recent years, declining water levels have led to multiple recoveries, including a body found in a barrel in 2022. Authorities noted that the man may have been shot, possibly in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Some experts suggest that Lake Mead’s proximity to Las Vegas, historically known for organized crime, could mean additional remains are yet to be found. One of the strongest El Niños on record could still bring significant snow to Colorado this winter.
If you're hoping for powder days in the mountains and major snowstorms along the Front Range, the outlook remains favorable for enhanced El Niño-driven snowfall in parts of the state.
Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have released updated data reinforcing the potential for a very strong El Niño. From July through early August, sea surface temperatures rose by 1.0–2.0 degrees Celsius, increasing the likelihood of a powerful El Niño this fall and winter.
If this warming trend continues into winter, when it is expected to peak, there is a 69% chance it could surpass previous events dating back to 1950, including the record-setting El Niño of 1982–83.

Trump Directs Pentagon to Scale Back Major Military Drills with South Korea

Widow of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson confronts Luigi Mangione for the first time.
Paulette Thompson, widow of the late UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, confronted Luigi Mangione on Friday as he pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to her husband's assassination. She was seen leaving the Manhattan courthouse following Mangione's guilty plea. When Judge Margaret Garnett asked Mangione if he understood that the maximum sentence he could face is life in prison, he affirmed, "Yes."
When given the opportunity to address the court, Mangione admitted that he had called UnitedHealthcare, posing as an investor to obtain information about the scheduled conference. "After years of enduring severe pain from a broken back, I learned UnitedHealthcare would hold an investor’s conference," Mangione stated. "Before traveling to New York, I used a 3-D printer to make a gun. On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, fully aware of my actions." Federal prosecutors indicated they planned to present several pieces of evidence at trial, including security footage showing Mangione arriving in New York by bus and following Thompson around the Hilton shortly before the shooting.

World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., defaced with bubbles and graffiti.
The World War Two Memorial in Washington, D.C., was subjected to vandalism on Thursday, including an overflow of soap in the fountain and graffiti bearing the phrase "Clean Hands, Dirty $." Dedicated in 2004, the memorial commemorates the 400,000 Americans who lost their lives and the 16 million who served in the armed forces during World War II.
One investigator in plainclothes bent over the site of the graffiti, measuring the damage with a tape measure, Reuters pictures showed. Workers arrived to remove the graffiti, the Washington Post reported, citing Park Police officers at the site.
“The vandalism is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said the Interior Department, which oversees the National Park Service. “Our U.S. Park Police are on site, and the investigation is ongoing. The public can be assured that we will hold the person responsible accountable for this reprehensible act.”
The Friends of the National WWII Memorial, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the site, called the vandalism “unacceptable” and stressed that the memorial is a “sacred place of remembrance.”
“There are many places in our country for expression, debate, and disagreement. “A national memorial honoring those who served and those who never returned home should never be used as a target for vandalism,” the Friends said in a statement.

Whole Foods Recall Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
Whole Foods has issued a recall for numerous items, including salsas, guacamole, and Pico de Gallo, affecting stores in 12 states. This action follows a salmonella outbreak that has also affected Chipotle, QDOBA, and Taylor Farms.
The recalled products contain jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors, a wholesale fresh produce supplier operating in both the U.S. and Mexico. Federal investigators identified a grower of fresh jalapeños in Sinaloa, Mexico, as the likely source of contamination after cases of salmonella were reported nationwide this summer.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there have been no reported illnesses linked to Whole Foods' recalled products so far. However, this salmonella concern arises on the heels of a cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms, which has already raised alarm among American shoppers.
In addition to Whole Foods’ actions, Taylor Farms recently announced a voluntary recall of over a dozen products containing jalapeños. A spokesperson for Whole Foods indicated that this prompted their response earlier this week. "The only reason we are issuing this recall is because these items include jalapeño peppers that were part of the Taylor Farms recall announced over the weekend," said the spokesperson for Whole Foods.

A DECADE OF CASINO FIASCO,
Social media has brought renewed attention to a decade-old legal case involving a New York woman who reportedly won a $43 million jackpot on a casino slot machine but was ultimately denied the payout.
On July 6, Aisar, a founder in finance and cryptocurrency, shared a post referencing the incident from 2016. The post recounted how “a single mother raised in foster care inserted 40 cents into a machine, saw it display $43 MILLION, took a selfie, returned the following day, and received only $2.25 along with a dinner reservation,” as noted in his commentary.
The post highlighted Katrina Bookman’s nearly $43 million "win" at Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York, during August 2016, including an image of the slot machine displaying the winning amount. However, the casino dismissed the winnings as resulting from a malfunction and only offered Bookman a steak dinner and $2.25 instead. There is no public record indicating that she has received any additional compensation.
“I feel like they treated me unfairly,” Katrina Bookman expressed to the New York Daily News shortly after the event.
Bookman filed a lawsuit against the casino; however, her negligence claim was dismissed by a New York City court in August 2018 while allowing her breach of contract claim to proceed.
A decade later, interest in this case persists. Aisar's post garnered close to 17 million views and 19,000 likes and was subsequently covered by Yahoo News on July 7. Many commentators voiced their thoughts on malfunctioning casino machines and questioned why casinos often escape accountability.
Gaming and legal experts have suggested that critics raise valid points despite courts typically siding with casinos in cases concerning faulty machine payouts due to state regulations that favor gaming establishments.
“State gaming commissions are legally required to prioritize gaming facilities when hardware malfunctions lead to incorrect payouts,” explained Robert Tsigler, founder and lead attorney at The Law Offices of Robert Tsigler, speaking with Moneywise.
Tsigler noted that legal language historically categorizes all hardware or software errors caused by malfunctioning equipment as invalidating claims for advertised payouts. As such, if there is an error showing $43 million on display due to hardware issues, it would be reduced to zero or revert back to the player's initial bet of $1.
“Players also encounter physical notices from machines alongside administrative codes that define screen displays as non-binding informational content,” he added. “Gaming regulatory bodies uniformly enforce this rule which leaves players with limited avenues for relief through administrative appeals.”
Even photographic evidence of multi-million-dollar payouts displayed on slot machines does not guarantee success in legal challenges faced by consumers within gaming contexts.
“The house usually retains an advantage according to documented rules,” remarked Nick Heimlich, owner and attorney at Nick Heimlich Law in San Jose, California. “When programmed odds do not align with what is shown on the machine’s display, that figure is considered erroneous and not an offer since regulators approve these odds.”
Consequently, players may find themselves astonished when encountering screens indicating millions that don’t equate to actual commitments.
“This situation is outlined within terms that most players overlook,” Heimlich pointed out.

Rescuers Hurry to Locate Survivors of the Earthquake in Columbia as the Numbers of Fatalities Increase.
Rescue teams and volunteers in Colombia mobilized quickly on Tuesday to remove debris while searching for survivors after the nation experienced its most powerful earthquake ever recorded.
According to President Abelardo de la Espriella, the earthquake resulted in at least 181 fatalities and left 1,595 individuals injured. He also reported that 195 people are currently unaccounted for, although civilian-operated databases indicate that the number of missing could reach as high as 3,900. Many families have taken to social media to share information about their loved ones, hoping for updates regarding their well-being.
De la Espriella noted that more than 1,100 homes were completely destroyed and over 8,300 sustained damage. In certain areas, rescue workers and volunteers were observed manually clearing away rubble.
The quake, measuring 7.4 in magnitude, struck cities throughout Colombia's western region shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time on Monday, causing residents to flee into the streets in panic.
In the city of Pereira—home to over half a million people—electricity was nearly entirely lost. Many residents chose to sleep outdoors due to fears of further aftershocks or because their homes had suffered significant damage.
"Since yesterday we've been wondering what will become of our lives," stated Gloria Giraldo, a 38-year-old housewife whose neighborhood was devastated.
As night fell on Monday, the city descended into darkness while volunteers scoured through the wreckage of collapsed buildings in search of survivors. Throughout the night, locals navigated pitch-black streets with flashlights.
Volunteers focused their efforts on a six-story structure housing shops and offices where it was believed two girls might be trapped beneath the debris.
"It's heartbreaking to see our entire city like this when there may still be people alive down there," remarked Juana Marin, 25, who joined other volunteers in clearing away rubble by hand.
"We're without power; it honestly feels like a zombie city," commented resident Juan David Gaitan.

Taylor Farms Another Outbreak
Taylor Farms has initiated a recall of prepared foods that contain jalapeños from retailers such as Walmart and Whole Foods across multiple states due to potential salmonella contamination. This marks the second significant foodborne illness associated with the produce supplier in recent weeks.

However, industry experts indicate that since much of Taylor Farms' produce is distributed wholesale without branding, it will be challenging for consumers to completely avoid these items. Many of the tens of thousands of people forced to evacuate because of wildfires near Spokane, Washington, were allowed to return home on Sunday as firefighters intensified efforts to put out remaining hot spots.
Despite another stretch of hot, dry weekend weather, nearly 1,700 firefighters kept three fires from spreading after they broke out August 1 on the outskirts of Washington state’s second-largest city, officials said.
As of Sunday, the wildfires had burned through an area of 10,000 acres (4,047 hectares) and either destroyed or significantly damaged over 900 homes in the vicinity of Spokane. At the peak of the crisis, evacuation orders affected approximately 64,000 residents as winds fueled flames that consumed neighborhoods, forcing firefighters to adopt a defensive stance.
No serious injuries or fatalities have been reported.
For several days, the fires in the Spokane area were identified as the highest firefighting priority across the entire United States, particularly affecting the drought-stricken Pacific Northwest. This region has seen numerous wildfires raging for weeks, emitting smoke and ash over a vast area.
In British Columbia, just north of the U.S.-Canada border, a distinct wildfire scorched over 10,300 hectares in a wine-producing area during the weekend, according to officials. Close to home….
Hello everyone,
I sincerely apologize for not having provided an editorial in quite a while. Life can become hectic, making it easy to lose track of time. This particular message is very personal and may resonate with a friend or loved one (I won’t disclose the individual’s name) who holds significance in my life.
Recently, I felt compelled to reach out to this person after some time had passed. After several rings, I left a voicemail. Approximately 30 minutes later, they returned my call. I was eager to hear how they were doing; however, the news shared was concerning.
This individual has been unwell for an extended period and recently attended court due to their divorce proceedings. For confidentiality's sake, I'll refer to them as J. Upon returning home from court, J called me back first among others whom they reached out to. When I asked what was happening, J replied with “Where do I begin?”
J then proceeded with their story: "V and I are going through a divorce," said J solemnly, "and my health has deteriorated significantly." They spoke about having undergone numerous surgeries that turned their life upside down—a point where thoughts of ending everything crossed their mind even leading them towards actions that could harm themselves.
As tears streamed down my face during our conversation—hearing such distressing details—I listened intently as J recounted feeling overwhelmed on one occasion when contemplating self-harm but hearing voices around them led them reconsider before acting impulsively.
In that moment of despair while holding onto something harmful—referred here metaphorically as 'the pew'—they noticed sounds coming from nearby bushes which revealed two individuals approaching concerned for well-being upon observing distress signals emanating from j.
The couple expressed concern asking if help was needed; noticing what held significant weight—they intervened by taking away any means intended for self-harm so necessary support could be offered instead.
Wiping away tears brought on by empathy for all the struggles J has faced in recent events left me feeling both powerless and compelled to act, especially upon realizing that previous attempts to seek parental guidance had gone unacknowledged and unmet.
Our conversation lasted nearly two hours, during which sharing our feelings openly provided a sense of relief. It was clear that both of us were seeking affirmation amid recent turmoil. Let this serve as a reminder: if you know someone who is struggling or experiencing thoughts of self-harm, please encourage them to reach out for help immediately.

As my internship comes to a close next week, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable experiences and growth I’ve gained over the past months. Working at a local newspaper and contributing to my own website has taught me essential skills in journalism, time management, and effective communication. I’ve learned how to research thoroughly, write clearly under tight deadlines, and adapt to unexpected challenges while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Beyond technical skills, this internship has deepened my appreciation for persistence and curiosity in reporting. Collaborating with editors, fellow writers, and sources has strengthened my confidence and highlighted the nature of news production. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to stories that inform and engage readers, and I look forward to applying these lessons as I continue to pursue a career in the media.
Reflecting my final week, this summer has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It is unusual to begin the school year in July.
As summer comes to a close, K-12 schools are preparing to commence their sessions. It is astonishing that schools in Arizona have already begun their academic year. After conducting some research, I discovered that one of the counties, Chandler USD, initiated classes on July 15. This timing is indeed surprising, considering it coincides with the hottest period in Arizona.
Having previously resided in Arizona but relocating from Michigan in late December, I did not begin school until the start of the new year. The thought of starting school in July or even August seems unfathomable to me. Interestingly, students there enjoy a fall break from October 12 to October 16, 2026. This arrangement somewhat mirrors the Kent School District in Washington State, where students receive a break during Presidents' Week.
In contrast, when I attended school in Michigan, our breaks were limited to Winter Break and Spring Break (with observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day). I faced disciplinary action for attending vocational training at Jackson Area Career Center on that day since other schools did not recognize MLK Day.
It is important to acknowledge that educational policies vary significantly across different districts. Today’s educational environment differs greatly from my high school experience; it is much more regulated with measures such as metal detectors and security cameras becoming commonplace. Recently, homeschooling has surged by 110% compared to last year. Although I attempted homeschooling for my child and a friend in 2020—a challenging experience—I was fortunate enough to find someone who could assist us.
In conclusion, it remains remarkable that the Arizona school district commenced its academic year back in July.

Strange Year for The Detroit Tigers
August has arrived, signaling the conclusion of the baseball season. Just ten days ago, the trade deadline was approaching quickly. While several teams engaged in trades, one transaction came as a surprise and had been speculated throughout the season: the Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal. A free agent at the end of this season, many had anticipated he would remain with Detroit. However, General Manager Scott Harris made a decisive move by trading away one of baseball's most formidable pitchers, a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner.
Fans expressed their outrage over losing the league's top pitcher, despite the Tigers acquiring three highly regarded prospects from the Los Angeles Dodgers in return. The Dodgers have consistently maintained a strong pool of top-tier prospects for future seasons. The Tigers' general manager is focused on rebuilding due to a relatively weak farm system, emphasizing that developing young talent is crucial for franchise growth. Currently, they have two prominent players at the major league level: Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark.
Skubal was likely to depart regardless since his agent intends for him to explore free agency in 2027. Given recent trends, it seems uncertain whether he will even participate in that 2027 season—a topic worth discussing separately. After trading both Skubal and Casey Mize, many expected the Tigers to struggle; however, they have begun to show improvement after a challenging May month. Their current ERA stands at an impressive 3.49.
Since June 1st, they have maintained a .500 record and recently won two out of three games against the San Francisco Giants, marking a seven-game winning streak. In several matches during this stretch, their offense recorded double-digit runs—including two games against Sacramento. This week in Detroit features matchups against the Cleveland Guardians from August 11-13 and then against the Chicago White Sox from August 14-16.

Is MySpace experiencing a resurgence?
I have been active on social media since the MySpace days, and I recently heard it may be making a comeback. I have also have a TikTok account for the past six years. During that time, I came across a social media influencer who works as a flight attendant. When I first started following her, she was not married, but she seemed to have a unique personal life that she shared online.
She eventually married her boyfriend and continued posting on her other platform. She shared updates about her life almost every day. About a year ago, things changed after it appeared that her husband had been involved with someone else. The situation quickly spiraled, but she and her husband eventually worked through it and patched things up.
A few months ago, she suddenly posted a video announcing that she was pregnant. The twist was that, because of her open marriage, she said she did not know who the father was. As a content creator, she chose to share that situation publicly, and that is the part that upset me.
I do not think moments like this should be shared on social media. After she narrowed down who the father might be, she told her husband and then posted his reaction online. I felt bad for him because of how public the situation became. In my opinion, something that personal should have been handled privately rather than shared on a social media platform.
I am surprised that the company she works for allows her public online behavior to reflect on its image. I eventually unfollowed her account because I found the content distasteful and felt that the situation was getting out of hand. In my opinion, this kind of personal matter should be kept off social media, especially when so many people continue to engage with it as entertainment.
I do not mind lighthearted or unusual videos, but sharing public updates about DNA tests, questions about paternity, and ongoing personal drama feels like too much. In my opinion, matters like that should be handled privately rather than posted for millions of people to watch. It is uncomfortable enough to see that kind of drama on reality television, where so much of it already feels staged.
I am not going to name the company she works for, identify her personally, or describe what she does outside of her job. However, readers may be able to figure out who I am referring to base on the details shared here.

The WNBA must become more aware of its current situation.
Politics can be hard to avoid because it shows up everywhere. On my website, I plan to keep political commentary to a minimum and only address it when an issue is especially important.
This time, though, I feel compelled to say something. I have generally supported the WNBA, but lately the league has seemed to lose control of the conversation surrounding Sophie Cunningham’s comments. After she made those remarks, several players appeared to target her, and during Saturday’s game she was clotheslined while driving for a layup. (not the first time either)
Cunningham is not someone I would underestimate, especially given her background in karate and other martial arts. Carrington’s hit was a clear cheap shot, and her ejection only intensified the reaction afterward. Carrington, who is African American, later described the situation as “white privilege,” arguing that Cunningham, who is white, remained in the game while she was removed.
After watching the replay, I did not see Sophie do much beyond a small push. By today’s standards, that seemed minor compared with Carrington clotheslining her as if it were a WWE match. I have not seen anything like it since Kevin McHale knocked down Kurt Rambis during the 1984 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Rambis got up ready to respond, but James Worthy stepped in and pushed him away.
As I said, Sophie appeared to do little more than give a small shove. She was clearly angry, and if her teammate and the coaching staff had not stepped in, the situation could have escalated quickly. The WNBA needs stronger leadership and clearer control of its games. Over the past two years, the league has looked increasingly rough, with Caitlin Clark taking repeated hard contact while many fouls appeared to go uncalled. If Clark decides to step away, the WNBA could face serious trouble. Something has to change if the league wants to keep growing and survive long term.

Could Seattle experience a resurgence of positive energy once more? Eugenio Suárez has participated in more Mariners reunions than the typical player receives farewell tributes, and there is now a possibility for yet another. Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic reported that Suárez has been placed on outright waivers, allowing the other 29 teams a 48-hour window to claim him. This action occurred officially on Tuesday, meaning there is only a limited time remaining before he becomes a free agent. If Seattle successfully claims him, it would take on nearly $3 million left on his contract.
A year ago, the Mariners traded first baseman Tyler Locklear along with pitchers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos to Arizona to bring Suárez back for a playoff push. The M's exchanged prospects for a 34-year-old player because they sought power and charisma at third base. Geno ultimately delivered one of the most memorable swings in franchise history, hitting an eighth-inning grand slam in Game 5 of the ALCS.
Following a somewhat underwhelming return to the Reds, they have placed him back on waivers without any trade involved; this time around, it’s about cash considerations, creating a roster spot, and accepting the imperfections inherent in Suárez's performance.
Now at 35 years old, Suárez has posted a .705 OPS over 103 games and has spent more time as a designated hitter than at third base. His total of 19 home runs indicates that he still possesses significant power. However, concerns regarding his strikeout rate and declining defensive skills help explain why contenders did not pursue him aggressively during the trade deadline.

Not only did J.J. McCarthy lose the competition for the starting quarterback position to Kyler Murray, but he also appears uncertain about securing the backup role.
According to ESPN, McCarthy is currently sharing second-team practice repetitions with Carson Wentz following an 80-minute session on Tuesday.
Since early August, McCarthy has held the No. 2 quarterback position on the roster; however, it seems he has not made a significant impression on many of the coaches during that time. As a result, Wentz—a former MVP candidate—might be encroaching on his playing time.
Wentz chose to sign a one-year deal to rejoin the Vikings in March, which was seen as an unusual decision at that moment since several teams, including the Jets, had shown interest in acquiring him.
This unexpected development during practice could indicate that McCarthy's place on the roster is at risk, placing him in jeopardy of being released by the team.
At 23 years old, McCarthy is in his third year of a fully guaranteed four-year contract typically awarded to first-round NFL draft picks.
A former national champion with Michigan, McCarthy has participated in just ten NFL games, recording 11 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions with a completion rate of 57.6%.

NFL Network's Kyle Brandt believes Deshaun Watson’s career should end following his press conference on Saturday.
Watson was booed by Browns fans in Cleveland during the preseason game against the Bills, facing jeers on nearly every appearance. Watson described the boos as “disrespectful.”
The Browns quarterback had previously been suspended after multiple allegations of misconduct from female massage therapists.
“It has nothing to do with performance,” Watson said regarding the boos. “It’s a little personal. I’m going to keep my feelings with me and my family internally. Just move on.”
Instead of acknowledging his past behavior, Watson shifted the focus onto the fans—a strategy unlikely to help his career. Brandt is now calling for Watson’s removal from the league.
“Was that a career-ending press conference? I think it might have been,” Brandt said on NFL Network. “I would cut him.”
Watson has started just 19 games since the Browns acquired him in a major trade from Houston four years ago, a move that has not paid off. He has also struggled with injuries.

In 1996, the Winnipeg Jets relocated to Arizona. However, various complications led Ryan Smith to acquire the Coyotes and shift them to Salt Lake City, Utah, resulting in the establishment of a new franchise—the Utah Mammoth.
Currently, it appears that the NHL may be the first North American professional sports league to expand beyond 32 teams. The league is reportedly considering several cities for potential expansion: Austin, Houston, Atlanta, and possibly Phoenix.
Expanding into Texas seems most logical due to Houston's significant population and Austin's recent development. Conversely, Atlanta poses a considerable risk given its history with two failed franchises in the city. Thus, both Atlanta and Phoenix carry uncertainties due to their respective pasts.
Among these four cities, Houston stands out as a viable candidate for hosting an NHL team. As the fourth-largest city in America with representation from all other major sports leagues, it presents a strong case; while Austin continues to grow, it remains relatively close to Dallas—home of the Dallas Stars.
It would be intriguing to witness the NHL’s potential return to Arizona following its previous challenges. Moreover, for fans of the Mammoth, this could spark an exciting rivalry.

Ishbia bought the Suns from the controversial former owner Robert Sarver for $4 billion in 2023, pledging to guide the franchise to a championship.
Although Ishbia’s ambitious ownership has prompted significant roster changes, challenges on the business side could pressure him toward selling the team, similar to Mark Walter’s recent sale of his Lakers shares.
Reports indicate that Ishbia’s United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) could face a margin call from JPMorgan after he used approximately 805 million UWM shares as collateral for the Suns purchase.
“In simple terms, Ishbia pledged about $4.6 billion in UWM stock to JPMorgan, but those shares are now valued at just $1.15 billion. This means he may need to repay the loans in cash and accessing that much liquidity quickly could require selling stakes in his sports teams.”

On Tuesday morning, ESPN announced that the former NFL kicker turned rap-country singer will serve as a weekly analyst on “Monday Night Countdown” this season.
Of course, it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone feeling there could ever be too much McAfee, as he has arguably become one of ESPN’s biggest stars. He hosts a daily TV show where he covers a wide range of topics and interviews top athletes, including Aaron Rodgers. Every Saturday during college football season, he appears on “College GameDay,” energizing the crowd with his antics and giving one lucky fan a chance to win a hefty prize by kicking a field goal in front of a lively audience.
Now, we’ll also get to see him on Monday Night Football, joining Scott Van Pelt, Jason Kelce, Marcus Spears, and Jason McCourty before each week’s final NFL game.

The Buss family’s effort to sell remaining 17.8% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers has stalled. Although reports said all six Buss siblings had agreed to sell their shares, one sibling is reportedly challenging the deal: Jeanie Buss, the team’s governor and eldest daughter of former owner Jerry Buss.
In a letter obtained by multiple outlets, Buss’s attorney, Adam Streisand, said she opposed the sale and argued that any vote by the Buss siblings would be void because it would violate the terms of the Buss trust, which owns the Lakers shares.
A statement attributed to the Buss family earlier Monday said the family had agreed to sell its remaining minority stake to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner as part of the broader team sale, explaining that they wanted to “exit gracefully.”

The NHL is considering placing its 33rd franchise in Texas, weighing two major markets and evaluating whether another expansion is worth altering the league’s current structure. The conversation has progressed beyond casual city interest. In June, Commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that the league began a six-month evaluation with the Friedkin family to explore establishing a team in Houston or Austin. Bettman estimated the total investment at around $3.5 billion, covering the expansion fee and construction of a new arena. No team has been approved yet; the NHL Board of Governors must still vote, and it’s possible that neither market will be deemed ready. Nonetheless, this represents a far more serious consideration than the usual expansion talk that often fades once arena costs are factored in.
Houston has long been considered a potential site for NHL expansion. As one of the largest U.S. Television markets without a team, it already supports franchises in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and MLS. An expansion team in Houston would also offer the league a natural rivalry, creating an in-state matchup with the Dallas Stars—no manufactured drama required.
The city has a rich hockey history. The original Houston Aeros played in the World Hockey Association, featuring Gordie Howe alongside his sons, Mark and Marty. A later Aeros franchise competed in the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League.
Houston’s primary challenge is its arena situation. Commissioner Bettman noted that both Houston and Austin would need a new facility, removing what once seemed to be Houston’s clear advantage.

On the surface, those results look solid, but the bigger picture tells a different story. Toyota’s Ty Gibbs won the race, Christopher Bell finished second, and no Chevrolet driver seriously contended for the victory. Dillon acknowledged this while offering his perspective on the positive aspects heading into the Richmond race weekend.
“Iowa was a good weekend overall for Chevy to get four cars in the top 10, but that’s not what we’re used to,” Dillon said. “We’re used to seeing Chevrolet competing for wins consistently. Overall, there’s a lack of performance there.”

Legendary Coach Don Nelson Passes Away
Don Nelson, a three-time NBA Coach of the Year and five-time champion, has died at 86, his family announced.
“On Sunday morning, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Don Nelson, peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family,” the statement said. “During his final week, friends and family surrounded him with love, celebrated his friendship and shared cherished memories.”
Nelson spent 11 of his 14 seasons as a player with the Boston Celtics, winning five NBA championships before moving into coaching after his playing career ended.
Nelson last coached with the Golden State Warriors in 2010 and retired as the NBA’s all-time winningest coach. During his 30-year coaching career, he led four teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks.
Nelson also served as general manager for all three teams and is one of only two NBA coaches to record at least 250 wins with three different franchises.
Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont said Nelson helped reshape the franchise and brought a “winning culture” to the city.
“Don Nelson was one of a kind, and his influence on the Dallas Mavericks and basketball will last for generations. His legacy remains visible throughout Maverick’s history and across today’s NBA,” Dumont said.
Nelson helped pioneer the role now known as the point forward, pairing it with an up-tempo offense that drew widespread attention. He said the shift away from the big-man-dominated style of the 1970s toward speed and fast breaks was inspired by his playing days under Celtics Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach.
“The league had rarely seen an offense like ours, and the results spoke for themselves,” Nelson wrote in 2016 in The Players’ Tribune.
Nelson is best remembered for his time in Oakland, where he drafted Stephen Curry and helped lay the foundation for the Warriors’ rise.
“Nellie was one of the most innovative and influential coaches in NBA history and an iconic figure in Warriors history. A true basketball visionary, he viewed the game differently and never hesitated to challenge conventional thinking,” the Warriors said in a statement posted to social media.
The organization said Nelson would be remembered for his authenticity, personality and passion for basketball.
In a statement, Curry said Nelson was known for not favoring rookies, but challenged him from the start and gave him the chance to grow on the court. “He had an immeasurable impact on the sport and will go down as one of the greatest minds in the history of the game,” Curry said.
In Game 7 of the 1969 NBA Finals against his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, Nelson made one of playoff basketball’s most memorable shots: a foul-line jumper that hit the back rim, bounced several feet straight up and dropped through the basket, the organization said.
Celtics Tribute
“The Celtics extend our deepest condolences to Nelson’s family, loved ones and everyone affected by his meaningful life in basketball and beyond,” the statement said. The organization also recalled his famous shot with just over a minute remaining in Game 7, when Boston held a narrow 103-102 lead. The basket proved crucial in helping the Celtics secure their 11th NBA championship in 13 seasons.
Nelson won all five of his championships as a player with the Celtics, who retired his No. 19 jersey in Boston in 1978, two years after his final season.
Nelson's cause of death wasn't revealed. He is survived by his children and his wife, Joy.

Sophie Cunningham and DiJonai Carrington were again involved in a tense moment between Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky on Saturday.
The play occurred in the first quarter as Cunningham drove to the basket on a fast break. Carrington caught up from behind and hit Cunningham around the head and neck, knocking her down as the shot went in.
After reviewing, officials upgraded the foul to a Flagrant 2 and ejected Carrington. Cunningham quickly got back up and confronted her before teammates stepped in to separate them.
After the game, Cunningham said she believed Carrington’s contact was deliberate.
“I thought it was unnecessary. I’ve never spoken to her, but I guess she had some frustration built up, so she let it out. That’s fine. I can handle it.”
The incident continued after Carrington’s ejection, when she tagged the Fever in a post that read, “WHITE PRIVILEGE.”
When asked about the post, Cunningham dismissed the idea that race influenced the league’s handling of the play.
“I think the league is handling it. This is not about race. I did the same thing last year, was ejected and deserved it. There is no reason to bring that into this.”

Beck, selected in the third round and recognized for his collegiate success at Georgia and Miami, took the field for the Cardinals against the Carolina Panthers in the NFL's preseason opener—the Hall of Fame Game held in Canton, Ohio. His performance was impressive.
He displayed considerable ease as he led the Cardinals on a 96-yard touchdown drive that concluded the first quarter. Despite being positioned near their own end zone, Beck made an impactful play when receiver Jalen Brooks executed an effective double move, allowing Beck to connect with him downfield for a 35-yard gain. What can viewers expect from the upcoming season of The Rookie?
Although Season 9 is still several months away, several characters who took a backseat in the previous season are poised for more consistent appearances. Season 8 featured numerous storylines, giving most characters their moments, but some received less screen time than usual. With Season 9 set to premiere in early 2027 as part of ABC's mid-season lineup, there’s plenty of narrative ground to cover.
While the series continues to center on John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), over time a clear hierarchy has emerged among the ensemble cast. Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) have become secondary leads, particularly as their professional partnership evolved into a romantic one, leaving other characters in supporting roles. Although they still receive screen time, there’s ample opportunity for their stories to expand in the new season.
Tamara Colins (Dylan Conrique), introduced in Season 3, entered Lucy Chen’s life with significant baggage. A homeless teen who once stole Lucy’s iconic orange two-door sports car, Tamara was welcomed by Lucy, who assured her she could reach out anytime she needed help. After moving in with Lucy following Jackson West’s (Titus Makin Jr.) death, Tamara became a permanent part of Lucy’s household. Though her appearances have been sporadic in recent seasons, fans will likely be thrilled to see her more involved in Season 9.

Michele Tafoya has emerged victorious in the Republican primary for the Senate seat in Minnesota, according to various reports. The Emmy Award-winning NFL sideline reporter clinched the win following the state's voting on Tuesday, August 11. She declared her candidacy in January.
In an interview with Fox 9 in Minneapolis, Tafoya expressed her team's excitement over winning the race with 52 percent of the votes.
"Currently, Minnesota is headed in a troubling direction, and it is the career politicians who have led us to this state of national embarrassment characterized by fraud, declining test scores, and rising crime," she stated. "As someone who cares deeply about Minnesota, I want to see these issues resolved."

Senate elections are scheduled for November 3. The last time Minnesota elected a Republican senator was in 2002 when Norm Coleman secured the position.

Jon Cypher, Notable Star of "Cinderella" and Hill Street Blues, Passes Away at 94
Jon Cypher, renowned for his roles in the original television adaptation of Cinderella, as well as in Hill Street Blues and Major Dad, has passed away. He died on August 3, as reported in his obituary by Oregon's Ashley News.
Cypher's portrayal alongside Julie Andrews in the 1957 CBS rendition of Cinderella was significant, marking the first live television broadcast of the musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. In the NBC police drama Hill Street Blues, he took on the role of Chief Fletcher Daniels, appearing throughout 73 episodes from 1981 to 1987. Additionally, he played Gen. Marcus C. Craig opposite Gerald McRaney’s Maj. John D. MacGillis in the popular CBS sitcom Major Dad, featuring in 69 episodes across Seasons 2, 3, and 4 from 1990 to 1993.
In film, Cypher portrayed Man-at-Arms in the 1987 adaptation of Mattel's toy franchise Masters of the Universe. His notable film appearances also include Tobe Hooper's horror movie Spontaneous Combustion (1989) and the romantic comedy Strictly Business (1991).
Born on January 13, 1932, in New York City, Cypher accumulated over 90 roles across both film and television during his career. Following his debut in Cinderella, he starred as Driscoll in NBC's daytime drama Our Five Daughters, which consisted of 160 episodes aired over a single season in 1962.
His other contributions to daytime television included guest appearances on three episodes of CBS' As the World Turns between 1978 and 1979; a role as Max Van Stadt for 24 episodes on ABC's General Hospital in 1981; and Dr. Arthur Donnelly, featured in 57 episodes of NBC’s soap opera Santa Barbara during its run from 1988 to 1989.
Cypher also played Jeff Munson across eleven episodes of CBS' hit series Knots Landing during Season 4 between 1982 and 1983; he appeared as Dirk Maurier for ten episodes spread over Seasons 4 and7 on ABC’s acclaimed show Dynasty from years spanning from '83 to '87.
Throughout his career, Cypher made numerous guest appearances on various television shows including but not limited to: Flipper, Mission: Impossible, Bonanza, and many more such as The Rockford Files, Dallas, and even an appearance in PBS' Great Performances where he played The Prince/Himself—a fitting conclusion to his illustrious career showcasing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

Brad Pitt's familial issues have significantly impacted him. The Academy Award-winning actor, who has been engaged in a prolonged legal dispute with his former spouse Angelina Jolie, discussed his mental health experiences amid the ongoing personal challenges in an interview with Esquire, published on August 10.
"I was never suicidal in any way. It just was not my makeup," the 62-year-old Pitt expressed to the publication. "In fact, if I have any afflictions, it's probably being a congenital optimist. Which has helped many times, and it's also gotten me – I've walked foolishly head-on into a Mack truck because of my optimism."
Pitt and Jolie, once famously known as "Brangelina" during their peak Hollywood relationship, filed for divorce in September 2016 after two years of marriage, finalizing their separation in December 2024 following a declaration of legal single status in 2019.
Since their divorce, the former partners have been involved in numerous legal disputes that have exposed elements of their reportedly turbulent family life. A conflict concerning Château Miraval, the French vineyard they previously co-owned, brought to light Jolie's accusations of physical abuse against Pitt.
This discord appears to have also affected Pitt's relationship with his children. Second-Weekend Box Office
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continued its remarkable box office streak, earning another $144.5 million domestically during its second weekend in theaters.
To put that performance in perspective, only one movie this year, "Toy Story 5," earned a comparable amount during its opening weekend. Disney and Pixar’s animated sequel debuted with $159 million. "Brand New Day" also delivered the third-biggest second weekend of all time, behind only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015 at $149 million and "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019 at $147 million. In total, only eight films have ever crossed $100 million in their second weekend.
Sony and Marvel’s web-slinging hit, led by Tom Holland, has reached $655 million in North America and $1.67 billion worldwide after 12 days in theaters. "Brand New Day" crossed $1 billion in just six days and is quickly approaching $2 billion. If its momentum continues, analysts are watching to see whether it could become the first film to reach $1 billion domestically and the only movie to top $3 billion globally. For now, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" remains the domestic record holder with $936.6 million, while "Avatar" and "Avengers: Endgame" lead worldwide totals with $2.9 billion and $2.7 billion, respectively, after multiple re-releases.
In a distant second on the domestic chart, "The Odyssey" held strong with $30.5 million in its fourth weekend, down 40%. The film has now earned $461 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide, making it Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date after surpassing "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion) and "The Dark Knight" ($1.008 billion). Nolan’s Matt Damon-led Greek epic still has room to run: Imax screenings are sold out through mid-September, the format has already generated $289 million in ticket sales, and the film has yet to open in China. Its success underscores Nolan’s rare box-office pull, especially for a nearly three-hour, adult-oriented sword-and-sandal adaptation of Homer’s 2,700-year-old poem.

Dr. Doom’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could pave the way for several major future villains. With legacy X-Men characters returning, the MCU’s cosmic scope expanding and multiverse storytelling now central to the franchise, Marvel has built a foundation for threats that once would have seemed too ambitious for the Infinity Saga.
Doom’s arrival raises a key question about where the MCU future goes next. As one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, he sets a high bar for whatever threat follows. Fortunately, decades of comics give the franchise a deep bench of antagonists capable of carrying the story forward.
Recent MCU projects have already begun laying that groundwork. The return of the X-Men characters of the expansion of the franchise’s cosmic side and the rise of multiverse storytelling all point toward threats that once might have seemed too ambitious for the Infinity Saga.
Rather than chasing another Thanos-style conqueror, Marvel can build on those existing threads with villains whose stories grow naturally from Avengers: Doomsday. These comic-book heavyweights feel like logical next steps for the MCU.
THE HULK DARK FUTURE
After Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, Marvel would need a follow-up villain who feels both unexpected and personal. Maestro could deliver that shock. He is one of Bruce Banner’s darkest possible futures: an older Hulk who survives a nuclear apocalypse, keeps Banner’s intelligence and rules what remains of the world as a ruthless dictator.
The Multiverse Saga has already shown that alternate versions of familiar heroes can become major threats, making Maestro a natural fit. Instead of introducing another entirely new antagonist, the MCU could force the Avengers to face a corrupt version of one of their oldest allies. That approach would also give Hulk a more prominent role after years of supporting other heroes, while letting Mark Ruffalo confront a twisted future version of Banner himself.
